Develop the Best Performance

European vehicle brands such as BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche and Volkswagen are known for their exciting driving experiences. They’re also known for leaving the dealer’s showroom with their true performance abilities untouched.

There are a lot of factors that come into play when tuning a car from the factory to be an amazing drive, but the most important is the engine. Stock engines from the factories are great and in many cases produce a lot of torque and horsepower, but what if you want more from your vehicle? European vehicles are the perfect platform for engine modification to produce even more power.

Why Modify a European Vehicle

European vehicles are the perfect engine platform to modify because of their quality. Many engines such as the BMW E46 and VW 1.8T are known to be “bulletproof”, meaning that the engine blocks themselves can handle significantly more power without failing. This is true with most European brand vehicles, the engines are already built for performance, so they are a great platform to modify.

Popular Engine Modifications

There are many ways you can modify your vehicle’s engine. Some options are more complex than others and can produce very different results. Here are some common ways an owner may choose to modify their vehicle’s engine:

  • Performance Spark Plugs: A quick and easy way to modify your engine is to replace your stock spark plugs with a better quality brand. It may seem incredibly simple, but the spark plug directly impacts how fuel ignites in the engine block and can impact the overall power of your engine. This is generally a good practice if you recently purchased a used European vehicle — you’ll likely see a performance bump immediately.
  • Cold Air Intakes: Stock intakes are often positioned in a way that draws in warm air, which is not ideal for combustion. Cold air intakes utilize a different position of the air intake that allows cooler air to enter the engine. A reusable and more aggressive air filter is placed at the tip of these systems, allowing for much better airflow.
  • Forced Induction Systems. Forced induction systems come in two forms, superchargers and turbochargers. Although they function in different ways, the end result is the same – more air is forced into the engine to create combustion. These systems are typically bolt-on and produce large horsepower gains.
  • Exhaust Headers and Manifolds: Headers and manifolds address the fumes being output after combustion occurs. The airways that lead to your exhaust are often restricted — by opening them you can increase horsepower and achieve better performance at higher and lower RPMs.

Performance Computer Chips: Modern European vehicles are largely controlled by computers. Factory chips ensure that the vehicle meets emission regulations, optimizes fuel consumption, and regulates your air to fuel ratio. By reprogramming your car’s engine control module (ECM), commonly referred to as a “chip”, you can control all of these variables and much more, ensuring your engine is configured to output the maximum power possible.
