Keeping You and Your Family Safe

Brakes are a critical system for any make or model vehicle, European brands included. Your braking system may be mostly hidden from view, but it is what helps keep you – and your family – safe on the road. Having properly functioning brakes can literally be the difference between life and death, so it’s important that brake repair and maintenance are taken seriously.

There are two main types of braking systems on vehicles, ABS Brakes (which are the standard on modern vehicles), and Standard Brakes (which are often seen on older models and classic vehicles). At Melbourne Motorsports, our expert auto repair technicians can help maintain, repair, or even replace any portion of your braking system.

Braking System Anatomy

Most modern brake systems are made up of a similar set of components. These components include:

  • Rotors
  • Calipers
  • Brake Pads or Shoes
  • Brake Lines
  • Brake Master Cylinder
  • Brake Slave Cylinder
  • Various Fittings and Valves

Depending on the type and age of the European vehicle you are driving, your system may be more complex. For example, in newer vehicles, brake systems also have sensors on the pads that tell the vehicle’s computer to display a warning light when the pads wear to a certain level and need to be replaced.

Brake Repair Warning Signs

Warning lights are very helpful to determine if you need to service your brakes, but they will not always identify every issue that arises with your vehicle. Given that the brake system is used every single time you go for a drive, it’s important to pay attention to other potential warning signs you may see or hear that indicate it is time for a service. If you hear or observe any of the following symptoms, it’s important to get your brakes inspected as soon as possible:

  • High pitched squealing or metallic noises when you press the brake pedal
  • Metallic scratching noises as you drive and as your tires are rotating
  • Vibrations in the steering wheel or feeling your vehicle shaking when you try to stop
  • A spongy feeling when you depress the brake pedal or needing to push it down further than normal.

You can help avoid the above issues (and more costly repairs) by having your brakes inspected annually, at a minimum. It’s also important to stay on your vehicle’s suggested maintenance schedule, as worn parts of your braking system will typically be identified during routine maintenance.
