Melbourne Florida Auto Repair — Frequently Asked Questions

When you search “Melbourne Florida Auto Repair” you get a lot of options for auto repair shops on the Space Coast.  However, many of the websites you find provide little to no information about the question you have.  As European car enthusiasts ourselves, we know this can be frustrating.  That’s why we are consistently adding new FAQs to our website each month.  You can refer back to our previous articles here and here as well!

We thought it could be helpful to put together the top-three most frequently asked questions we hear from customers who are discovering us for the first time.  As always, if you don’t find the answer to your question, just give us a call, and we’d be happy to help!

I'm going on a road trip, how should I prepare my car?

This question is becoming much more common as people are not flying as much. Staycations in Florida or road trips to different parts of the US are fun, but can take a toll on your vehicle. At a minimum, we recommend you do the following before you leave:

  • Check all lights to ensure they are working.(Headlights high and low-beam, brake lights, turn signals, parking lamps and (if you have them) fog lights)
  • Check wiper blades. Inspect them for cracks or tears, and make sure they’re operational.
  • Check all hoses. Look for any cracks or holes in hoses, and replace any that are not in good shape.
  • Check all belts. Inspect all belts to ensure that none are worn, loose or frayed.
  • Inspect the battery. If there is corrosion on the terminals, you can clean it away with a toothbrush and a pasty solution of water and baking soda.
  • Check all fluids levels.

What do I do if my car starts to overheat while i am driving?

As soon as you notice you are overheating and it is safe to do so, pull over and shut off your vehicle. This is a very serious problem – if your car overheats for too long, you can damage your engine. Even if you are close to home or your destination, paying for a tow truck could potentially save you thousands of dollars.

Also, you should not attempt to check the fluid level in the radiator. This fluid is under pressure, extremely hot, and can cause severe burns.

Does my "lifetime" transmission fluid ever need to be changed?

Many manufacturers are trying to show lower annual maintenance costs by using what they call “Lifetime” fluids. However, we see a high number of transmission failures on high-end European cars that could have been prevented. With the cost of transmission replacement in excess of $5,000, the service seems like money well spent, even with the higher costs of some transmission fluids!

As long as your vehicle is under warranty and you stick to the recommended service intervals, there should be no issue.  However, if you are purchasing a late model vehicle, it may make sense to service the transmission to be safe.  Always opt for a PPI before buying!
